The question word ‘who’- ვინ(vin) is being used for persons only, such as: ვინ ხარ შენ? (vin khar shen?)-who are you?; ვინ არის ის? (vin aris is?)-who is he/she?; ვინ ხართ თქვენ? (vin khart tkven?)-who are you?
ვინ ხართ თქვენ? (vin khart tkven?) -Who are you? მე მწერალი ვარ (me mtserali var) I am a writer.
ვინ არის ის? (vin aris is?) – Who is he/she? ის ექიმი არის/ის ექიმია¹ (is eqimi aris/ is ekimia) He/she is a doctor.
The question word ‘what’- რა(ra), can be used only for non persons: რა არის ეს? (ra aris es?) what is this?
რა არის ეს? (ra aris es?) – What is this? ეს არის ხე (es aris khe) – This is a tree.
ეს არის სახლი ( es aris sakhli) – This is a house.
ეს არის მაგიდა (es aris magida) – This is a table.
Note:¹ instead of the forms: ის არის ექიმი, ეს არის ხე, ეს არის სახლი, or, ეს არის მაგიდა, – Can be used: ის ექიმია, ეს ხეა, ეს სახლია,- whereas the letter ა/a is a short form of ‘is’ and a sighn for the third person.
